Codes and conventions elaboration.

  • The codes and conventions of a music video are very important, because it gives the audience a sense of knowing and understanding. And audience likes to see clear genres to films and music videos. If codes and conventions were to be taken out of certain music videos, they wouldn't be as successful as they are and if we did this to our own video, it wouldn't be marked up and the audience would be uninterested. This is the same for ammeter videos and artists that want to get somewhere with their product. The audience needs to be able to categorize the music video. They would usually watch videos to see their favourite artists  or for a type of escapism, this also gives them some kinds of communal pleasures and they can share the experience of watching a video with their friends.
  • We are aiming to make our video as pleasing as possible, we want something that will make our audience wish to be doing this with 'the band' or to make them smile.

Design Ideas

Font- We were looking for a font that isn't typically used, I decided to look on 'DaFont.com' to find fonts that were made by other people and companies, as they have a variety of different and unusual fonts. Paramore aren't a cliché rock or pop band and in their latest album, they have developed a slight alternative theme and feel to their songs.
  • Images- We have not taken any images for the digipak, but we plan to do something similar to what a lot of bands have done, which is taken a photo shoot with the same clothes and theme to the album cover, as like they did in the music video. For example, in the 'Now' video by Paramore, they use paint bombs as the wounds made by other actors and the band have this paint all over them. They use this as their album cover, poster and for one particular t-shirt, but on the shirt , it is just an image of Hayley Williams from behind. She wears a light blue denim jacket and it acid wash on her back, the words 'Grow Up' can be read which, again, can be read back to the album which is the name of one of the songs. She is also wearing this jacket in the Self-Titled album, but you cannot see the back of it to be able to read the words.
  • Colour- We chose to have light and colourful scenes, especially the set up scene  with the balloons, because bright colours are lighter and usually relate to happy things and if a person were to watch this back, we would want them to feel happier, rather than watching a video with dark colours. We plan to keep this colourful theme for the digipak and poster, perhaps a dark background with light colours.
  • Costume- We wanted to wear  something a little more alternative and slightly punk. The two boys wore something co-ordinated (grey skinny jeans and a shirt or shirt and jumper.) As I am the 'lead singer' I wore something that didn't match with them, but tried something girly or alternative to link with Hayley's style. This made me stand out as the lead singer, just like Hayley does in most of Paramore's video. I think it is very important to stand out as the 'lead singer' because just like Hayley, I will be a style icon to fans. (If we were a real band.)

Album Advert - Analysis of Advert

Jessie J - Price Tag:

  • The video has a clear link to the advert that has been created, as she is wearing the same clothes as she did in her video and also she has her hair the same.
  • from the two screenshots that you can see from below one of them is the official music video and the other is the advert for the album.
  • the first picture is the advert and you can see that she is wearing a lot of black in this picture, this includes her hair colour, lipstick and her nail varnish.
  • the second picture is a screenshot from the official music video and you can see that she is basically wearing the same clothes as she is in the advert and also her hair colour is the same colour, the only thing that i can see that is different is she doesn't have black lipstick.

Inspirations for our music video

  • Jake Miller - I'm Alright:

In Jake Miller's video I'm Alright, as a group we were inspired by its humble approach regarding the singer Jake. Throughout the video when the lyrics cut to the rapper he is simply walking along the street, with its background changing along with the beat. Our interpretation of this was to get Andrea to sing in a outside setting rather than just a studio setting.

  • Paramore - Ain't it fun:
Ain't it fun, was the overall inspiration for our music, video using that song, but in particular we liked the symbolism used. Keeping to this idea we put balloons into our video in replace of the coloured records used in the video by the band, so the audience find it relatable. The use of balloons makes the audience relate to the song, and it gives us some relation to the original track. Furthermore we can use the symbolism of balloons in our digi-pack.

  • Paramore - Still into you:
Still into you also inspired our music video, using balloons and a house scene showing happiness following the lyrics. We adopted this idea, filming at Andrea's house using her pop up studio, and furthermore we added balloons, into the video symbolising the records from ain't it fun and giving a direct link to still into you showing our research into other Paramore songs.

  • Kings of Leon - Super soaker:
This video, gave us inspiration, to add colour effects over the top of our video, to make it appear much more interesting and give a new element to the video making it more interesting, fitting the genre. In this video we also wanting to use the singer at a microphone shot which we used in our video with studio scenes of Andrea.

Korn III: Remember Who You Are, summary.

  • Unfortunately, there is no debut music video to the 'Remember Who You Are' album. It seems that this is just the title of the album.
  • On research, I found out that the album is one of three that have the same theme, (this is not all of Korn's albums, as they has nine). The three albums are all produced by Ross Robinson, and they all have a child abuse theme, which would explain why the girl looks uncomfortable and the setting is not somewhere where a young person would be. The three albums are:
  • Neidermeyer's Mind (album one- 1993)
  • Life is Peachy (album two- 1996)
  •  Remember Who You are (album three- 2010)

  • Ross Robinson (producer) has worked with Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, The Cure and other artists.
  • The only song that I found that could be slightly linked to the Remember Who You Are album is the song 'Oildale' (this is where the shoot for this album was taken, Oildale California).
  • I cannot find any explanation as to why the Korn and Robison decided to use the theme of child abuse as their album art.

Korn III Cd analysis

Korn III: Remember Who You Are- CD Analysis

  • Carry on from the album advert analysis.
  • The CD of Korn III- Remember Who You Are has an image of a dirt road. The road is very similar to the road that the car is on in the album advert. The CD also has Korn's logo on it, the title of the album and 'Special Edition' on it.

  • The inside of the CD case has pictures (or textures) of the ground, the one on the left has a wet, leafy looking picture, the one in the middle a cracked and dry mud texture and the one on the right is a loose dirt looking ground, but there is a what looks like some sort of industrial object on it. I am unsure of what it is, but I definitely think that it is some kind of tool. Each image is in black and white, which seems to be the running theme at the moment with this CD.

  • On the front of the CD cover, it has a of the girl walking and the car behind her, like in the promotional advert in 'Kerrang!'. It also has Korn's typical font logo in red and white, this is so that people recognise that this album belongs to them and catches the eyes of fans.

  • On the back of the CD case, there is a list of the songs in block white writing, the writing stands out on the black and is easy and clear to see, like it does in the promotional advert in the magazine. The background image is of a dry and loose dirt road, looking like it is in the middle of nowhere, this image is in revert black and white. Underneath the song list, there is a little bit of information about the DVD (which you receive with the special edition of Korn III: Remember Who You Are.) There is also a small logo in red at the bottom that reads 'Roadrunner records', this will be Korn's record company and there are two web addresses for Korn and Roadrunner Records main websites. Lastly, there is a bar code to identify the CD in a shop.

The DVD (special edition CD) has a black and white image of industrial machines, the image looks revert, like the back of the CD cover. The disc has outlines of what I think is industrial machines, again. I think this is some sort of theme, and may be the location of where the photo shoot and perhaps the Remember Who You are video is situated. The DVD, like the CD includes Korn's logo, CD title and 'special edition'.

  • The booklet that comes with the CD the same picture of the girl and the car behind her in black and white. And then Korn's logo and the title of the album. On the back of the booklet, it has an image of an ant hill, as a viewer, you are looking straight down upon this ant hill and there are ants emerging form it. I a, again, unsure as to what this stands for, but perhaps this will be revealed in the video.

Album advert analysis- Jessie J

  • This advert that I have found is a Jessie J album, named Jessie J Who You Are. It is an advert that was created to help sell Jessie J's album "Who Are You".
  • One of the bad things about this advert is that there isn't that much information on the advert itself.
  • It has most of the important information on it, which includes details about the album, stating that the album was her debut album and that it includes the international smash hit that is "Price Tag".

  • The information that is not included on this advert is there is no price letting the viewers know how much the CD costs, and which stores the CD will be sold in.
  • The good thing about this advert is that it has all the simple information, it also has the official website of Jessie J so you can get more information on it.
  • In the bottom corners of the advert you can see that there are two companies that read as "Lava" and "Universal Republic".

Album advert- Korn

Korn III

  • I found an advert for the album Korn III: Remember Who You Are. It was out 12 July 2010. The advert is featured in Kerrang! magazine. It was an advert to help sell their upcoming album (of that time).
  • The advert clearly states that you can pre-order the CD and it will be priced at £8.95, but has an offer to buy a special edition ("includes 3 bonus tracks and a DVD with in-studio videos for all album tracks") for £11.99, giving you more material for a few more pounds. Giving the chance to pre-order appeals to the fans as they can receive it the first day it is available and have it before anyone else does.

  • The layout is spread out simply, one image on the left and another on the right and the text in the middle. Spreading everything out makes the advert stand out, as there is more space that it takes up and the big text and images make the reader want to look and read. This ad takes up one half of two magazine pages, which is bigger than the many other adverts in this magazine. If the advert was overcrowded with words and images, it would put a reader off, as is is too much to read for something that is advertising a CD which the reader could potentially be buying.
  • The words 'Korn III' is used in the typical Korn font, which is featured in their logo. This automatically attracts fans of Korn to look and read, fans will also know what the 'III' stands for. the rest of the text is in bold and capitals, making it clear and stand out, helping the advert put its point across. The font is somewhat bright coloured and stands out over the black background. It is also spread out and there isn't too much too read, the sentences are short and simple to understand making it user friendly.

  • The colour theme of the advert is light on dark. The red and white stand out on the black, making it extremely clear to read. The colours also make the advert stand out, as the font is brightly coloured and catches your eye as you flick through the magazine. The colour theme also signal what kind of band this could be (rock, metal, alternative, etc).
  • There are two photos on the advert, the left one is in black and white and has the body of a girl on it, but you cannot see her face. This could be just to show that she is walking. You have full view of what the girl is wearing, which is, ripped jeans, knee high socks, converse, multiple bracelets and a tank top. The setting looks as if it is in the middle of nowhere, it doesn't seem like a place where people would be. There is a car behind her, you cannot see into the window shield to see who is driving it, but it looks like it is driving towards the girl. The picture is quite moody looking and has a lot of depth to it.

  • The image on the right is in a sepia colour and it is an over the shoulder shot of the man driving his car, he has pulled up next to the girl. You can now see the girls face and she looks quite young and is looking over her shoulder slightly, looking back in the man in the car. she is not smiling, she looks somewhat uncomfortable and could be 'nervously' brushing her hair from her face. The sun looks like it is hot and beating down on her, making the scene a little more uncomfortable. But as I am not a fan of Korn, I do not know if this is true, the man in the car could be a band member. Most people who look at this advert who aren't fans of Korn, probably wouldn't know what these images mean, but maybe fans do. This, again, would make the advert appeal more to the fans as it would make them feel special and almost as if the advert was dedicated to them.

Day 4 of Filming

Today was our fourth day of filming, we only encountered a couple of problems, which weren't major. Today was the day for filming the wooded scenes, but the woods were very muddy and they weren't ideal for running around in as they were on a hill, making it extremely slippery. We had one team member fall over and when running up a hill, realised that there were thorn bushes everywhere. We then found another location to try and redo the scene, in case we couldn't use the other. We then filmed the 'shoes' scene, where we walked to the beat of our song, completing the first scene to our music video. We filmed this in two different ways, to make sure we had enough footage in case we decide we want to change anything. We had to film the first scene a few times as getting everyone to walk to the beat at the same time, turned out to be quite tricky. We still have a few more hours of filming, so if we decide anything needs re-filming or we want to add anything on, then we know that we can. We changed the scene of the 'walking feet' from the woods to a path, as there was a path which quite nice looking and was better than using the muddy woods.
Next time, we plan to film our last scenes, which is the bridge scene, we aren't totally sure on which bridge we will use yet, we have an idea of one but is about 20-30 minutes walk away, which would eat a lot of our time up. I am searching for bridges that are closer, or seeing if we can catch a lift off of someone.

Day 3 of Filming

We had planned to do some filming for the first three periods of school on Thursday outside in the woods, but it was raining all morning, meaning we couldn't. One of the group members also forgot their clothes to use for filming. The night before today's filming, we decided to re film last weeks scenes, as when we were filming (with the studio sheet portrait) we were finding it difficult for us all to fit in the scene or throw the balloons around without getting arms, hands and bags in.
This weeks filming was a lot more successful, we used the studio again, but this time using the sheet horizontally, this gave us a lot more room to film and we didn't find it difficult throwing the balloons around this time.
Generally, we re filmed what we did last time, but I think we added a bit more of a variety of shots, including mid shots, close ups, pov's and high angle shots. We made sure we over filmed so that we have plenty of film to use and if we want to, change the video a little.  We are using the storyboard as a general outline and aren't depending on it too heavily, because we are coming up with a lot of new ideas during filming time.
Today we filmed scenes of two of the group members throwing balloons around and having a 'fun' time and we filmed a group member miming. We are hoping to really pull this whole video together when it comes to editing and are hoping that it does come across as fun and light hearted, but something we took seriously at the same time. We didn't get round to taking too many photos today as we were more focused on filming.

Day 1 of Filming

Day 1

Today was our first day of filming, we used a music studio. We originally planned to have a scene of the whole band including the singer performing the song together. We decided not to do this because the studio was small and the drum kit would have taken a long time to move and we only had 3 periods to do it. We included someone else into the band scenes, as we needed a drummer, but this isn't a problem because Paramore also have a drummer to drum for them, as they don't have a drummer that is part of the band.

We remembered to take pictures and there weren't many problems apart from the studio being too small or too cramped. Bradley and Brandon forgot to bring their clothes to change into for filming, but it didn't turn out to be too much of a problem as they don't look too out of the scenes. We managed to film some scenes of the band playing, (drums, bass and guitar) and then separate scenes of the singer miming the lyrics.

We then added extra scenes, in which we may or may not use. We plan to do a bloopers video, to try and get as many marks as possible and so that we can add extra blogs posts. We filmed extra scenes, like a group discussion that we are thinking about adding to the video and we filmed a scene of Bradley and Brandon miming the lyrics, but this was more of a jokey clip that will possibly be added to the bloopers.

Day one of filming seemed to go well and we managed to get a lot of angles and extra clis, meaning we will hopefully not need to go back and film more at the end.

Day 2 of filming

Today, we walked to Andrea's (my) house, to use the pop up set. A lot of the time was spent blowing up balloons and setting up the backdrop, lighting and camera. I think today, we may have run out of time a little, or we could have done with a little extra time. We filmed many shots, but we feel that the balloons scene may have been a little too staged looking, as we were trying to aim for a happy and natural looking video. We will have to see if the scenes from today need to be re filmed or if there is enough scenes, or we may even need to think of a new idea. We mainly had problems with getting the balloons to fall , as the two boys had to throw them about , while I (Andrea) mimed the lyrics. We had problems with arms getting in the shot of the camera, but we should have enough footage to be able to cut and edit them to make enough out of the footage we have.

We also took videos and images of what we were doing to add to the blog and for the bloopers video. We are trying to use our time wisely and get as many shots as we can. If we need extra scenes at the end, we have agreed to make room for some 'catch up' days.

What to remember.

What to remember

·         To take the camera out before filming and to take it back after.

·         Take pictures when filming to make blog posts.

·         Make a blog post for every day we are filming.

·         Film from many angles and use different shots to ensure that there is enough film footage.

·         Keep all scenes, for blooper videos.

Filming timetable

We created a filming timetable, deciding when and where we needed to go and which props we needed on which days.
