Goodwin's Theory

Goodwin’s Theory

Goodwin’s theory is based on 8 main principles.

·         Links Between lyrics and visuals.

·         Links between music and visuals.

·         Genre Classification.

·         Intertextual references.

·         Notions of looking.

·         Voyeurism.

·         Demands of the record label.

·         Performance/ narrative based music videos.
Links between lyrics and visuals and genre classification are very similar. It is associated with certain traits for example, when watching a rock or metal music video, you would expect to see a lot of stage performances or with a rap video, you would expect to see the artist with flashy cars, wads of money or sexualised women.

Voyeurism is usually about portraying men and women sexually (mainly women). It consists a lot of eye contact with the camera. Most artists sell their music through sex appeal.

Record labels demand a lot of close ups of the artist and the artists visual styles which recurs across their work.

Intertextual references appeal to the audience because they like to know the inside joke.  An example would be Taylor Swift’s Love Story, which referred to Romeo and Juliet.

Goodwin believed that it was important for an artist to be involved in their music videos somehow.  This could be performing or acting out a role, this connects the audience with the artist.

Album Cover anaylsis- Coldplay

The colour scheme also follows a scheme throughout their performances as in each of their performances as they make sure this paint colour is on their personal clothing or that in fact they paint their instruments in the graffiti style to make it relatable to the album cover.
The name of the album almost shows the Coldplay cult, by this I mean that unless you listened to Coldplay or in fact followed their music you wouldn't get the name and you wouldn't know it was indeed their music, they achieve this by using a totally irrelevant title to the album, so unless you knew what you was looking for you wouldn't realise immediately whose album it was.
This is also shown as they are not on the album cover showing the individual side to the album and how only real fans, or people who know the band will buy the album.

The graffiti is used on this album cover to show the vibrancy of Coldplay’s new album and how they were and still are very much breaking away from the usual norms they followed. They do this by using the graffiti because it breaks them away from the norms and almost shows their rebellious streak, rebelling from the norms they used to follow.
The symbols are also used on the album, to add another element to the album cover as they represents the songs, shown through little emojis.

In our own album covers we have thought about using the idea, of not putting our 'band' name on the CD cover to make it more original, it also allows you to make the cover more interesting, as like Coldplay the use of leaving their name from the album cover, gives the ability of making the cover in any way they see fit without having to fit in with their expectations.
We would also like to play with colours as the genre of our song, fits under the genre of 'alternative  rock' so the use of colours, and no band, would once again deviate from 'rock' norms, making the album more original and fitting to the genre in which our song falls.

Star Analysis- Coldplay

Coldplay- Star analysis:

  • Coldplay in an English alternative rock band.
  • Coldplay were formed in 1996 and are still creating and writing music.
  • The band consists of Chris Martin (lead vocals), Guy Berryman (bass, backing vocals), Johnny Buckland (guitar, backing vocals) and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals).
  • They have six albums in total: Parachutes, A rush of blood to the head, X&Y, Viva la vida (death and all his friends), Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories.
  • They have a total of 58 awards including 8 Brit awards and 7 Grammy awards.
  • Originally they called themselves Pectoralz then changing their name to starfish before finally deciding in 1998 to call themselves Coldplay; a good choice.
  • Coldplay pride themselves on being a relaxed easy going band making many people such as myself find them appealing.
    • Coldplay's career started as a massive impact to the rest of their legacy. Their first album Parachutes released in 2000, transformed their career from being uni mates in famous stars set to take global stage, selling a total of 8.5 million copies worldwide with Shiver and Yellow taking number 1 spot.

  • Coldplay's career has changed massively over the years and that is why I chose to do a star analysis on them.
    • When Coldplay started their career they was very humble and almost shy as a band.
    • Whereas they are rather vibrant and colourful in their new work, Mylo Xyloto.
    • And now in their decent they have returned to more a sombre attitude in Ghost Stories.
    • Coldplay show through their stages of development the need for adaptation in the music industry, they have went back to how they started now but have had a dramatic change in the middle to keep people interested shown in Mylo Xyloto. #

Music Video Analyasis- Friday I'm in Love- The cure

The Cure- Friday I'm in Love
  • The dancing in this video does not seem to have any choreography, there is no acting, but there are quite a few scenes in which the band are shown playing, with Rob smith singing.
  • The video consists of fun scenes, where they look like they are having a good time. They are seen picking up and playing with random objects, perhaps trying to show how fun and random they are.
  • The record label demands a lot of scenes of Rob Smith because he is the lead singer and in some ways he is the lead of the band. Another reason as to why The Cure's record label would demand a lot of scenes of Robert Smith is because a lot of men and boys in the 80's and 90's would look up to Rob as a role model and a fashion icon.
  • The lyrics aren't very relevant to the video, as they just seem to be trashing the set and playing with props and costumes.
  • The director of this music video is Tim Pope, and the band actually has multiple record labels. Fiction, Suretone, Geffen, Polydor, Elektra, Asylum and Sire records all play some part in producing music for The Cure.
  • Rob Smith's wacky and out of control, punk rock hair is certainly a motif.
  • There are also a couple of inter-textual references to do with this song, for example, the opening line to the song, 'I don't care if Monday's blue' is from the New Order song 'Blue Monday'.
  • Robert Smith also stated that 'the song about seeing your girl on Fridays was for people who "aren't actually fans of The Cure."

Music Video Analysis- a Sky Full of Stars- Coldplay.

Music Video analysis:

A Sky Full Of Stars-Coldplay:

  • Chris Martin leads the video and the camera work is predominantly on him.
  • Coldplay as a band are shown as happy and relaxed shown with their fancy dress and relaxed attitude towards screaming fans.
  • This is also allows Coldplay to show them as humble as they talk to fans and act really down to earth, letting the crowd follow him and he performs for them.

  • The lyrics also fit the song with their dress sense, the song is quite relaxed and happy and this is represented through the bands dress.
  • This is also shown with Chris's attitude towards the fans as the lyrics are predominantly directed to an individual and he sings whilst looks and almost directing the song towards individuals.
  • This is also supported by the camera work as it stays upon Chris the whole time showing that the song is a direct song addressing one person.
  • Also camera shakes are addressed within the beat of the song.
  • The conventions for merchandise are shown with the predominate use of Chris and the fact that the whole song although cuts to the band its mostly on Chris showing him as the face of Coldplay.
  • There is also looking used in the video with Chris stopping and watching a TV screen with Coldplay performing on stage.
  • We also see an inter-textual reference within the music video as on the side of the drum attached to Chris's back is the image of the album ghost stories cover so it links to the album its from and advertises the album.
