I'm Alright Jake Miller - video analysis

I'm Alright:

  • The video of Jake Miller, I'm Alright, follows a clear direction, it has a tone of genuine and humble from the establishing shot to the very end.
  • The video in this video, is very concise and shows the message of the lyrics in a very visual form.
  • In our own work we would like to use a story to explicitly outline the lyrics, and the message being portrayed, making sure the viewer finds the song enjoyable and gets the message thrown towards them.
  • We want to make sure that the mise en scene of the video all follow one theme to keep the video on topic and interesting.
  • The song focuses on one man, the singer showing identity.

  • The story follows, a clear direction, fitting in with the full song.
  • The beat changes with the background with the song.

  • The mise en scene follows the lyrics of the song.
  • It reverts back to the beginning of the song at the end.
  • The setting is shown through an establishing shot setting the tone of the video.

Music video analysis- Paramore- Still into You

Paramore- Still into You.

  • This video possesses a happy, go lucky, fun feeling, it has an up beat son, sickly sweet background scenes as well as lyrics and an alternative style.
  • There is story behind the lyrics, I think Hayley may be talking about her current partner, but she could be talking about how situations like this make her feel.
  • Even though the video appears to be nothing to do with the lyrics at first, if you think, she could actually be showing how being in a long relationship like this makes her feel.
  • The first scene starts off as serious, so you don't know what the video is going to be like. Then the beat kicks in and the band starts having fun.

  • A lot of the back drops and background scenes are bright coloured and somewhat elegant, I especially like the scene with the cakes all around Hayley, with the pastel coloured bed sheets.

  • They also use a lot of fast, colourful lights, like a disco, also possessing a fun and happy feeling.

  • There are also other props used to make the scene even more playful. They use sparklers, ride around on bikes, kick balloons around sit in a spinning boat and pretend they are rowing around.
  • We got the idea of using balloons from the video, but instead of using a collection of colour co-ordinated balloons, we want to use a selection of colours, as we aren't going for a sea theme like the scene in this, we just want the balloons to create a multicolour, sickly sweet, fun feel.

  • The record label demands a lot of close ups of the lead singer. Hayley's hair and fashion makes her a style icon toward a lot of teenagers, but the same can go for Jeremy and Taylor (bassist and guitarist).
  • There is an obvious alternative style in this video, they are all dressed differently and a lot differently to what society would wear and what is 'in'. Even the scenes possess an alternative look and feel, such as the ballet dancers, who are tall, elegant and are dressed professionally, whereas Hayley is dressed in a brightly coloured outfit, eccentric colour hair and she is very short and dances how she pleases.

  • It looks like Paramore had a lot of genuine fun filming this video and that is what our group aim to do during filming time, as well as getting work done.
  • We briefly spoke about using fireworks or sparklers like Paramore do at the end of this video, but I think that the group may not be able to find the money to get fireworks.

  • The video, 'Still into You' has been one of our main influences on props and feelings and we hope to achieve this in our own video.

Kings of Leon - Supersoaker:

Kings of Leon - Supersoaker:
How can we use this video in our own work?
  • The identification, of the band members, are something we can use are going to try and use in our own music video, so the audience can discover quickly who the band members, are making our digi pack easily identifiable.
  • We are also going to lay big emphasis, on the band, as to make the whole, song fit around one main singer, something used a lot in this video, although the lead singer, takes centre stage, the band also gets a good view.

  • The use of filters, in this video, is something we are going to look to use in our video, as the filters present a natural theme to the song and video. for example this filter presents the 1950/60's American theme.

  • The story of the song also fits, perfectly with the video, and lyrics. This is something we want to replicate as the song lyrics, have to co inside with the little video.
  • The images, in the song and the constant referral to the lead singer, Caleb, give the song and identification to the album and the band as a whole.
  • This is key in this video as the song, doesn't fit the album style, like the other songs, presenting irony showing that they are not a 'mechanical bull'.
  • It is also, clear as it follows, on theme throughout, which once again we are going to try and replicate in our own work.

Analysis of past students work- Somewhere Only We Know

Somewhere Only We Know- Lily Allen (Student YouTube: Amyismynamey)

Looking at Goodwin's theory, I have analysed a past students work, I think they very successfully created a music video, using Lily Allen's Version of 'Somewhere Only We Know'. The genre of the song is pop, but I feel that it is a very slow, 'cutesy' and dreamlike song.

  • Looking at genre classification, I can see that this was successfully done, Lily Allen's voice in this song is quite high pitched, harmonic and sweet sounding. The producers of this student made video obviously went out on sunny days to film, so there is a warm light shining on the girl a lot and gives the look of the filter look slightly hazy, I think this makes it look somewhat dream like. They also went to a scene where there is a river, I think this helps with the cute and sweet look, as the sun is also shining on the river and there are birds around. To add to the editing, the students also used slow motion shots, adding to the innocent and dream like feeling. These reasons could also be used to show the links between music and visuals.

  • Another thing to add to these reasons is the use of POV shots, as these shots make me feel as if the actress/singer in this video is on a walk with someone, maybe a loved one, and the filter put over the POV scenes are made to look like they are being filmed off a camcorder, like a home video. Also, the scenes of the girl singing in what looks like a studio are also made to look dreamy and girly like, as the filter has what looks like unfocused light flares put into it.

  • The record label would demand close ups of the singer, which is what they use a lot in this video, half of it due to the fact that there is only one singer that sings this song. I think that it was a good idea to make a video that doesn't include anyone else, there is another character at the end, but you don't see his face, only in a picture and it goes to the POV shot of him looking at the girl opening the door at the end of the video.

  • There is no sexual portrayal in this video, as it would not match with the genre and doesn't suit the innocence of the song.

music video analysis-Dizzee Rascal- Love This Town

Music Video Analysis- Dizzee Rascal-Love This Town

  • Dizzee Rascal stars in this music video as stereotypical gangster who looks to want to vandalise his local community.
  • Like many other music videos, this one has a strong connection with the lyrics in a way that there is a story behind it.
  • In this video Dizzee Rascal comes across as the gang leader and most of the video the group look as though they want to vandalise there local community.

  • From these two screenshots it shows a before and after shot of a certain scene in the music video. The first screenshot shows the gang looking as though they are preparing to vandalise the shop in front of them, and then when you look at the second screenshot you actually realise that the so called gang are helping the shop owner by helping him clean his shop windows.
  • This music video uses a lot of props as they are doing going deeds for the community instead of bad ones.
  • I really like this music video as it links well with the lyrics and a short story has been placed in the music video so that many viewers are able to understand the video when they watch it.

  • This final screenshot shows another good deed being done by these group of young people as they are simply helping put out the rubbish.

Past students work analysis

On my analysis of past students work the song they have chosen is Apologize by One Republic and Timberland.
  • The first thing I notice about this students work is that most of the lyrics have a strong link in terms of what the song is saying.
  • This video also uses a story to replicate the lyrics used in the song.
  • The genre is alternative rock and that is clearly replicated in the placid video.
  • In the video they use pictures of the lyrics to identify the song.

  • In this music video this group have decided to use the two main people in the video to create a story within the video so that it is understandable to the viewers.
  • This is an easy video to understand because they have used a story to relate to the title of the song, which is Apologise. The story is basically a break up and the word apologise is what they use to get back together.
  • This final screenshot of the letter being burnt relates to the lyrics really well because the lyrics at this time talk about being to late to apologise which makes sense because they are burning the letter trying to forget about this relationship.

Goodwin analysis on past student work

Analysis of past students work: Macklemore Can't hold us:

  • Clear visual of singer, taking the main parts, of the song identifying him to take centre stage, making sure the audience know who is in control of the song and who the stage lies around.
  • Story is clear, identifying that the lyrics, through the story, presenting them on screen to show the clear connection.
  • Links to the identity, showing their home town, and showing the lyrics on screen.
  • Good use, of props and costume to make the song look less like a school production, and more like a real music video.
  • Cuts to a comic strip, fitting the comedic values of the song, and make the video more interesting.
  • Cuts half way through, to give a new song and a new element to the video, this makes the song more interesting and fits in with the style of the video, whilst deterring from repetition.
  • The ending and the story make sense in the video, relating the lyrics clearly.

Music genre research- Indie rock

Indie rock

  • Indie rock is a type of alternative rock and it originated in the United Kingdom in the 1980's.
  • It includes subgenres like, indie pop, jangle pop, C86 and lo-fi.
  • It was originally used to describe record labels, but in the mid 1980's the term 'indie' began to be used to describe the music produced on post punk labels.
  • Most indie record labels were founded in the 1980's.

Joy Division, a band formed in 1976, producing indie/rock songs.

  • Grunge became mainstream in the 1990's and alternative lost its cultural meaning.
  • Other genres following Indie pop are, lo-fi, noise pop, emo, sadcore, post punk, space rock and math rock.
  • Emo nearly broke out into mainstream in the 2000's because of Jimmy Eat World's platinum selling album, Bleed American.

  • Growth of technology in the 2000's meant that the internet was a massive advertising point for artists and bands.

Album cover Analysis- Paramore

Self Titled Album- Paramore

  • This album cover doesn't contain the band name, which could be considered a good selling point, as this would encourage fans to want to buy it because it is like an exclusive to them, as non fans may not know that this is Paramore. Or the band could have enough recognition to not need to name themselves, as most people already know who they are.
  • As Paramore's latest, the Self Titled album introduces a new genre of music and style, especially compared to their last, it seems as though they are not reckless teenagers anymore and their music has matured, songs having a lot more meaning than what they did in their past albums. But they have still kept their alternative style, just becoming a little more edgy.
  • Williams' hairstyle has also changed, perhaps this is another way to entice fans to buy the new album, or perhaps top catch their eye.
  • I think having all three band members on the cover is a way to show the fans that Paramore are still strong, (as in recent years, two band members left and fans were worried that Paramore was going to be no longer together.) This cover is showing that yes, there is three of them instead of five, but they will still be going very strongly.

  • The posture of the band members are very alternative, as you would usually have a simple pose of the artist or band, usually facing forward, but Hayley, who could be seen as one of the main selling points of the band, is facing the other way, having the bass player and guitarist facing the camera, perhaps letting them have the limelight.
  • The powder paint splodges that are all over the band members clothes relate back to one of the videos that is in this album. The song is called 'Now' and it was the first release with a video that came before the initial album release.
  • Low lighting has been used on the cover to create an edgy look and give the blacks more depth. And the make up looks almost minimal. Everyone is neatly groomed to show how much more mature they have become.

  • The text they have used for the back of the album to show song titles are in their new style of writing. They seem to have adapted a new style and have used this for various pieces of merchandise and song titles. The 'E' they use is similar to their logo, if turned horizontally. Each bar stands for each member of the band.
  • Linking back to the fashion, Although you cannot see it, Hayley is wearing a light blue denim jacket and on the back it reads, 'Grow Up', this is yet another reference to one of the songs on the album.

Alternative Rock Music Genre

The genre of alternative rock is described as alternative due to its difference from main stream rock, the term "alternative" was adopted in the 1980s to describe bands inspired by punk rock, on independent record labels that did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time.

  • Alternative rock, although being classed as 'rock' is influenced, by genres of music such as folk, reggae and jazz.
  • One famous example would be Mumford and sons, who use folk music merged with alternative rock.
  • Alternative rock, is very successful, as it is more open to listeners without being too strong willed and set to one style of fan.
  • Many alternative rock artists during the 1980s were cult acts that recorded on independent labels and gained fans through college radio airplay and word-of-mouth.
  • The breakthrough of Nirvana, and the grunge genre many alternative rock bands, were given centre stage to shine and come into musical mainstream.
REM:
  • REM was an American alternative rock band formed in 1980.
  • They were one of the first famous alternative rock bands.
  • Out of Time 1991, and Automatic for the people 1992, were their two most famous albums.
