Music video Analyasis, Paramore- Playing God

Paramore- Playing God.

  • The video, Playing God is very well made, it has a lot of hidden meanings, close to the band and the fan base.
  • The video and song refers back to another song by Paramore, called Ignorance, which fans can easily pick out. In the video, Hayley Williams (lead singer), has the band tied up in one scene, she also has a lot of flash backs to tell you what happened beforehand. Hayley poisoned the tea so that she could tie them up in her basement. At the time, the band had a lot of problems and most of the fans knew that they were on the brink of splitting up. Perhaps tying the band up was a metaphor for keeping them together.

  • Halfway through the video, Hayley stops and looks in the mirror and sings to herself, "this is the last I can chance.", perhaps referring to how she can treat the band and vice versa, as the band were trying to blame her for the arguments and then she tied them up and had them under a magnifying glass, shouting at them and scrutinising them. At this moment (looking in the mirror) she is realising that she too is 'playing God', in fact all of them are and accusing each other.
  • Hayley then sings to herself, 'I'm half as good as it gets' and 'I'm on both sides of the fence', saying she is also to blame but she is on no ones side.
  • The end scene shows that they are all to blame and that them all blaming Hayley will not help anything. She then proceeds to shut the basement door on them, still leaving them tied up. Perhaps she is letting them know that they are not being let off easily.

  • Through out the video, Hayley looks at pictures of the band, maybe when they were happy together and she also looks at and sings to herself.
  • The video itself doesn't have any dancing or dance routine. It is an acted video in which tells a story, close to the band and the fan bases hearts.
  • The video contains a lot of retro props (mini cooper), costume, make up and filtering. (Lens dust and flickering.

  • The record label, which is Fueled By Ramen, demands a lot of scenes with Hayley Williams. As she is like the part of the band in which most fans want to see. A lot of teenage girls follow her fashion sense and boys find her attractive. Hayley stands out from the band as the lead singer, being the voice of the band. People who aren't even fans of Paramore may recognise Hayley Williams.

  • Hayley's hair is always different for each music video Paramore produce. She is well known for her wacky hair colours. Her usual colour is bright orange, this is like her trade mark. Lots of people (mainly girls) will aspire to be like Hayley and may also dye their hair to look like hers.

Director study- Mat Whitecross

Director study:
Mat Whitecross- Coldplay Music video director.

A short bio:
  • Mat Whitecross’s first feature film The Road to Guantanamo, which he co-directed with Michael Winterbottom, won them Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006.
  • He then went on to make music videos for various artists, including Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Take That and Jay-Z.

My inspiration:

  • Mat is known for making many of Coldplay's music videos.
  • His videos:
  • Paradise, Every tear drop is a waterfall, Violet Hill, Charlie brown, Christmas Lights.
Why him?
  • I have chosen to look into Mat as he is a rather famous and critically acclaimed music video director.
  • He has done quite a few Coldplay music videos, and with them being my favourite band I have watched and study much of his work.
  • He has won many awards, despite the fact that he hadn't planned on directing music videos.

Ain't It Fun Lyrics

Ain't it fun- Paramore

I don't mind letting you down easy
But just give it time
If it don't hurt now then just wait, just wait a while

You're not the big fish in the pond no more
You are what they're feeding on

So what are you gonna do when the world don't orbit around you?
So what are you gonna do when the world don't orbit around you?

Ain't it fun living in the real world
Ain't it good being all alone

Where you're from
You might be the one who's running things
Well, you can ring anybody's bell to get what you want

You see, it's easy to ignore a trouble
When you're living in a bubble

So what are you gonna do when the world don't orbit around you?
So what are you gonna do when nobody wants to fool with you?

Ain't it fun living in the real world
Ain't it good being all alone

Ain't it good to be on your own
Ain't it fun you can't count on no one
Ain't it good to be on your own
Ain't it fun you can't count on no one

Ain't it fun living in the real world

Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world

Ain't it fun
Ain't it fun
Baby, now you're one of us
Ain't it fun
Ain't it fun

Ain't it fun

Ain't it fun living in the real world
Ain't it good, ain't it good being all alone

Ain't it fun living in the real world
('Cause the world don't orbit around you)
Ain't it good, ain't it good being all alone (oh)

Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
(Down to your mama)
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
(Don't go crying to your mama)
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
(Oh, this is the real world)
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
(Don't go crying to your mama)
This is the real world
This is the real world

Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world
Don't go crying to your mama 'cause you're on your own in the real world

Videos looked at.

We have started looking at videos to give us inspiration for our own, we have also used our own ideas. The videos we have looked at are:

Home- Dan Croll- The idea of travelling and walking with not much 'acting' as such.
Still Into You- Paramore- The idea of having fun and using things such as bikes, skateboards or sparklers.
I'm Not The Only One- Sam Smith- Having a story to the short video, but cutting to the singer (in our case, the band).
Super Soaker- Kings of Leon- looking at the band cuts and the filters used to create certain effects.
Love This Town- Dizee Rascal- Looking at the idea of plot twists, such as the gang in this video seeming as if they are going to cause havoc, but the actually help the town.
Prayer inc- Lilly Wood, The Prick and Robin Schulz- In this video we were looking at the alternative side, the skateboarding and the face pain, which matches in with Paramore's style very well.
The Pretender- Foo Fighters- This gave us a better idea of having cutaways to a band.
I'm Alright- Jake Miller- The idea of having someone who loves life as it is and appreciates things.
